Driving from Baku to the Regions: Distances to Gabala, Sheki, Quba, Lankaran & Fuel Costs (2026)

Before any road trip outside Baku, two questions come first: how long is the drive and how much will fuel cost? Without those answers it's hard to plan a route or choose the right rental car.

This guide puts the distances from Baku to the most popular regions of Azerbaijan, approximate driving times and round-trip fuel costs in one place.

Distances and Driving Times from Baku

DestinationDistance (one way)Approx. driving timeKnown for
Shamakhi~120 km2 hPirgulu, Diri Baba Mausoleum, Meysari wine region

Distances vary by route. For Ismayilli, the road via Shamakhi and the Aghsu pass is shorter. Times exclude traffic, weather and stops.

How to Calculate Fuel Costs

The formula is simple:

Fuel cost = (round-trip km ÷ 100) × litres per 100 km × price per litre

The table below assumes:

  • Economy sedan (Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, etc.): ~7 L/100 km;
  • Crossover / SUV (Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, etc.): ~10 L/100 km;
  • AI-92 petrol: ~1.15 AZN per litre (2026).

Round-Trip Fuel Cost Table

DestinationRound tripEconomy sedanCrossover
Shamakhi~240 km~19 AZN~28 AZN
Quba~340 km~27 AZN~39 AZN
Qusar (Shahdag)~360 km~29 AZN~41 AZN
Ismayilli~370 km~30 AZN~43 AZN
Gabala~440 km~35 AZN~51 AZN
Lankaran~540 km~44 AZN~62 AZN
Sheki~610 km~49 AZN~70 AZN

For example, a family of four driving to Gabala and back in an economy sedan spends about 35 AZN on fuel, under 9 AZN per person.

Note: Fuel prices change. Some cars require AI-95, which costs more. Check the fuel type in the listing or ask the owner.

Toll road: Towards Quba and Qusar, a 129 km section of the Baku–Quba–Russian border highway is a toll road. For a passenger car the full toll section costs about 12 AZN. Add it to your budget.

Which Car Should You Rent?

Lahij, Khinalug, mountain villagesCrossover or 4x4Narrow, steep and sometimes unpaved roads

Heading to Shahdag or Gabala in winter (December to March)? Ask the owner whether the car has winter tyres.

5 Tips for Driving a Rental Car to the Regions

  1. Check the mileage limit. Some listings have a daily limit. Sheki and back is over 600 km, so if there's a limit, work out the extra-km cost in advance.
  2. Fill up in the city. Petrol stations are sparse on mountain roads.
  3. Take the photo report seriously. Odometer and fuel-gauge photos matter most before a long trip.
  4. Avoid mountain roads at night. Livestock can wander onto regional roads in the evening, and lighting is poor.
  5. Watch for speed cameras. Highways are closely monitored. See: Driving in Azerbaijan: cameras, fines and parking.
