How to Rent a Car in Baku as a Tourist: Documents, Deposit & Pickup Checklist (2026)

Planning a trip to Azerbaijan and wondering whether to rent a car in Baku? This guide walks you through the whole process: the documents you need, what to check in a listing, how the security deposit works, what to inspect at pickup and how to return the car without disputes.

Locals call it many names: rent a car, arenda maşın, kirayə maşın or avtomobil icarəsi. They all mean the same thing: you rent a car for a day, a week or a month and drive it yourself.

Do You Need a Car in Baku?

Your planDo you need a car?
2–3 days walking around the Old City and the BoulevardNot really. The city centre has heavy traffic and paid parking, so taxis and the metro work fine
Day trips to Gobustan, Absheron or ShamakhiYes. A car is much cheaper and more flexible than tours or full-day taxis
Gabala, Sheki, Quba or ShahdagDefinitely. Mountain regions are best explored at your own pace
Business trip or longer stayYes. Weekly and monthly rentals bring the daily price down

Documents for Foreign Visitors

To rent a car in Baku as a tourist you need:

  • A valid passport;
  • Your national driving licence or an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Carrying an IDP alongside your national licence is strongly recommended, especially if your licence is not printed in Latin letters. Traffic police may ask for it at a roadside check.

Minimum age: 18 on Carent. Some owners set a minimum of 21 or 24 for higher-class cars, and this is shown in the listing.

During sign-up, the app checks your documents and a quick liveness selfie. You only do this once.

    • whether a security deposit is required, and how much;
    • insurance type (compulsory only, or Kasko comprehensive cover as well);
    • any daily mileage limit and the price per extra km;
    • pickup location and time (some owners deliver to the airport).
  4. Book and pay online. Unpaid bookings are cancelled automatically after 24 hours.
  5. Pick up the car and complete the photo report (see the checklist below).
  6. Enjoy the trip and return the car on time.

How the Security Deposit Works

The deposit covers minor damage, missing fuel, late return or unpaid fines. On Carent:

  • each listing states whether a deposit is required and how much;
  • the deposit is paid in cash, directly to the car owner at pickup. It is not part of the online payment and no card block is involved;
  • it is returned in full when the car comes back on time, clean, with the same fuel level, undamaged and with no outstanding fines.

Tip: Mention the deposit amount in the in-app chat when you hand it over. A written record helps if there is ever a disagreement.
