Driving to Shahdag in Winter: Road Conditions, Choosing a Car & Costs (2026)

In winter, Shahdag Mountain Resort is one of the most popular trips from Baku. Every weekend, thousands of people head towards Qusar for skiing, snowboarding, snowy mountain views and family time.
Buses and tours exist, but driving yourself gives you the most time and freedom. This guide covers how to drive to Shahdag in a rental car in winter, which car to choose and what to watch for on snowy mountain roads.
Baku to Shahdag: Distance and Time
| Details | |
|---|---|
| Route | Baku → Baku–Quba highway → Qusar → Shahdag |
| Distance | about 200–210 km one way |
| Driving time | around 3 hours, depending on traffic and weather |
| Toll road | a 129 km section of the Baku–Quba–Russian border highway is tolled (about 12 AZN for a passenger car for the full section) |
| Hardest part | the mountain road up to the resort after Qusar |
The highway section is wide and easy. The challenge usually starts in the last kilometres, climbing from Qusar: bends, gradients and, in winter, snow and ice.
Which Car for Shahdag in Winter?
| Car type | For Shahdag in winter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Crossover / SUV (AWD or 4x4) | ✅ Best choice | Ground clearance and all-wheel drive are a big advantage on snowy climbs |
| Crossover (front-wheel drive) | 👍 Fine | Handles most days well on winter tyres |
| Sedan | ⚠️ Clear weather only | Can struggle on the mountain road on a snowy day |
Tyres matter more than the car type. Driving a snowy, icy mountain road on summer tyres is dangerous. Before you book, ask the owner:
- Does the car have winter tyres?
- Is it all-wheel drive (AWD / 4x4)?
- Is there a spare wheel and tools?
Ask in the in-app chat so the answer is in writing.
Driving on Snowy Mountain Roads
- Leave early. On weekends the road gets busy towards midday, and driving the mountain road after dark is harder.
- Check the forecast. If heavy snow or a blizzard is forecast, postponing is the right call.
- Slow down and keep your distance. Braking distances on ice are several times longer. Stay much further back than usual.
- Be smooth. Steer, accelerate and brake gently. Use a lower gear on descents.
- Fill up. Fill the tank before the climb. You burn more fuel in traffic and cold weather.
- Pack: warm clothes, water, a phone charger and a snow brush for the windows.
Note: Accidents on snowy roads follow the usual insurance rules. If something happens, don't move the car, call the traffic police (102) and notify the owner via the app. More: Car rental insurance in Baku.

Day Trip or Overnight?
- Day trip: Leave at 7–8 am, reach the resort before noon and drive back in the evening. Six hours of driving in one day can be tiring, though.
- Overnight: Staying in Qusar or at the resort is more relaxed and means you don't have to come down the mountain in the dark. Rent the car for at least 2 days.
